Lesson #1 - The Antebellum Period 1848 - 1861
Tutorial begins with a time line and maps distinguishing free states from slave states. Important topics are the addition of the Southwest to the United States, manifest destiny, determining new lands as slave or free, the California gold rush, the Compromise of 1850, elections of 1852, 1856, and 1860, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the underground railroad, formation of the Republican Party, the Dred Scott Decision, Lincoln versus Douglas, John Brown, the South secedes, and Fort Sumter.

This lesson begins by tracing the events that led to the war. It also traces events that led to Lincoln’s issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. The details and significance of each major battle are discussed.. Major battles are Fort Sumter, Bull Run, Peninsula Campaign, Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Shiloh, Chancellersville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, the Wilderness, and the "March to the Sea."

This lesson begins with the War in the West, the Blockade of 1861, naval battles in 1862 of the Merrimac and Monitor, the Battles of New Orleans and Mobile Bay, covers the actions of General Grant in the East, Sherman’s "March to the Sea," and ends with General Lee surrendering at Appomattox.

This lesson presents a comprehensive coverage of the economic, political, and social issues of the Reconstruction Period. It focuses on what the war settled as well new problems the war caused.
