The Achievement Prep Series serves as a comprehensive, sequential, stand-alone course in basic skills. Instruction is aimed at all students. The features for remediation make it especially suitable for students who have been unable to do well academically, and who have been unable to pass standardized tests. Unique drill, practice, and problem-solving are presented only after extensive tutorials teach and illustrate the intricacies of the subject matter.
Each lesson contains remedies for errors students frequently make on standardized achievement tests. Content is broken into small steps, explained in varied contexts, and carefully sequenced. The main tutorial in each lesson is interspersed with quick quizzes. Students are given the option to "redo" the tutorial portion if their scores are less than 100%. This feature lets less able students score well on the final report. It builds self-esteem as well as mastery. The program uses the student's latest score on the final report.
Correct responses give reinforcement of why the response is correct. Incorrect responses lead to redoing part of a tutorial or to branching to a new context for the same question. For mastering critical understandings in some lessons, after ample tutorials, questions are re-asked until all questions originally missed are answered correctly. The great benefit of these structural techniques in the courseware is that students are provided with a superb preparation for performing well in the classroom and on achievement tests.
The lessons within The Achievement Prep Series do not fall into the category of "edutainment." They are of high educational value.
